The Practical Driving Test

Before sitting your practical driving test I would recommend that you firstly go through a full mock test with your instructor. This will help prepare you for the real thing and hopefully reduce the level of nerves, simply because you know what is coming.

What documentation will I need?

  • The appointment card (a letter will be sent through the post from the DSA)
  • Both parts of your provisional licence (plastic card & paper counterpart)
  • Theory Test Certificate

As from the 1st October 2007, the old style driving licence must be accompanied by your passport, if you have a new style licence you must present BOTH parts of it.

What will happen on test?

During your test the examiner will be building up a picture of your ability to control your car and assess your attitude and understanding of different traffic and road situations.

The test should last usually about 40 minutes (depending on traffic conditions) and may be a mixture of country and town road driving.  You will have to do 2 of the 4 manouevres; in addition you may have to demonstrate your ability to do an emergency stop.

The manoeuvres are:

  • Reverse around a corner - this can be done to the left or right.
  • Turn in the Road
  • Reverse Park behind another vehicle
  • Bay Park - reverse into a parking bay at the test centre

To successfully complete these manoeuvres ALL will have to be done with a great degree of control and awareness of your surroundings. You must see and react to other road users in a safe manner.

When will I know the result?

At the end of your test the examiner will give you your result. You are allowed 15 minor driving faults. If there are any serious or dangerous faults you have not been successful this time, the examiner will offer you a de-brief explaining why they have come to that decision - if this happens please listen carefully.
